Our survey revealed that nutrition and home cooking are the topmost drivers for making cooking-related decisions. Interestingly, a report by UNICEF on food security also points out that nutrition is one of the major contributors to food security challenges. We are simultaneously dealing with malnutrition- both overnourished and undernourished population. Malnutrition highlights the link between stark income disparities and nutrition.

Cooking is an important decision making step between production and consumption of food. Hence, sustainable cooking tenets would certainly make a positive impact on addressing malnutrition and thereby help to achieve food security goals. A report by the Government of Canada, on improving cooking and food preparation skills, emphasizes the role of cooking for developing a strategy for healthy living.

Sustainable cooking offers many solutions to address malnutrition and food security challenges.

  • Effective promotion and adoption of nutrition standards for every family lead to the selection of proper portions, balanced ingredients, and proper cooking techniques.
  • Sharing food and donating – food grains, cooked food, fruits, even cooking equipment, etc. within communities is an effective habit to promote food security. It also helps to reduce wastage. This study in South Korea well demonstrates many societal benefits of sharing food.

In the next article, we will consider the impact of ready to eat food and usage of processed and semi-processed food.
